vs. Selenia, Dark Angel; Balthor

Wort, Boggart AuntievsSelenia, Dark AngelBalthor the Defiled

My fist draw is 7 lands. My Mulligan has one. I play it anyway, and soon a Shrine of Burning Rage

Balthor has an Ancient Tomb, Mana Crypt, Altar of something, Maze of Ith, but NO SWAMPS. Selenia had a Vizkopa Guildmage and a Tithe Drinker.

I manage to get Krenko for a little bit while Balthor is slowly dying to his own Mana Crypt, but then Selenia gets an Exquisite Blood and the Vizkopa Guildmage makes us die.

About the Deck ( http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/worts-dragons/  OR http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/bladewings-goblins/)

This deck has interchangeable Commanders in Wort, Boggart Auntie and Bladewing the Risen.  It’s both Dragon and Goblin Tribal. Usually when I play Wort, I draw lots of dragons and the opposite is true for Bladwing.   Lots of cheap goblins can make for a pretty big Dragonstorm, though.  I tend to have trouble drawing lands in this deck.

vs.: Balthor; Sapling of Colfenor; Ruhan of the Fomori; Karona, the False God;

Brion StoutarmvsBalthor the DefiledSapling of ColfenorRuhan of the FomoriKarona, False God

I started with 3 lands, personal sanctuary , Squee and a Sunforger, which seemed decent.

There was a mana doubler at some point. Ruhan played a Grand Melee and later a Powerstone Minefield for extra fun.  Karona played a scrambleverse, and I ended up with 3 zombies and a Terastodon, but then a Living Death is played.

Karona has a, quite relevant, Ice Caves. I manage to level up a Figure of Destiny, but it dies to removal. Balthor has a huge Soulless One, while Sapling of Colfenor, via Vigor, has gotten quite large.

At one point I have Brion, Sunrise Sovereign and a Nim Deathmantle, but I don’t think I won this game. I don’t actually remember who won it, but it was a decent game.

About the Deck (TappedOut soon)

It’s pretty much about Brion flinging things, with a bit of Giant tribal.  Most often, it’s Squee that gets tossed, which is sort of silly and inefficient.  There’s some damage prevention and some damage doublers (as well as Avacyn and Gisela), and I like Pyrohemia.

Vs.: Jaya Ballard; Ruric Thar, the Unbowed; Balthor

Vela the Night-Clad VSJaya Ballard, Task MageRuric Thar, the UnbowedBalthor the Defiled

I start with 3 lands and an Augury Owl. Balthor has an early Fleshbag Marauder.

I start building up some decent stuff like Cloud of Faeries, Puppet Conjurer, a Dopplganger, Sengir Autocrat, Ashnod’s Altar and Thopter Squadron, but I have a really hard time keeping Vela on the table because Jaya Ballard can just kill her for R.  Ruric sends some General Damage my way, Balthor plays a Gray Merchant, but Jay Infernos everything and then we all die to the Red Women (the theme of the Jaya deck).

About the Deck (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/vela-fleck/)

The decklist in the link is an early version of the deck, and may not reflect its current state.  The goal of the deck is to have creatures leave the battlefield  (my favorite way being looping Su Chi with Ashnod’s Altar and Nim Deathmantle for the added bonus of infinite colorless mana), OR to have a lot of cool artifact creatures with Intimidate.

Ashling the Pilgrim.1VSBalthor the Defiled

This game took place while we were waiting for more people to arrive.  I played Tibalt on turn 2 (which received great praise for awesomeness), Ashling on turn 3 and an early Stigma Lasher (that got at least one hit in, preventing Balthor from gaining life shenanigans).  Balthor had a grave crawler and a bunch of other zombies.  Tibalt died after being activated 3 times.

Ashling blew up for 6 damage, which wiped the board, but Balthor followed up with a Grave Titan. I was mounting a comeback when Geth showed up. Balthor had enough mana to activate Geth multiple times per turn (grabbing a Stigma Lasher the first time).

More players had arrived, so I cast a kicked Molten Disaster for enough to kill me and end the game in a fiery apocalypse.

About the Deck ( http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ashling-the-terrible-2s/)

The rule for this deck is that every card has a CMC of 2 (or a split-card half that costs 2, and including X spells). It’s pretty fast, and a lot of fun to play.

Fittingly, the deck has two versions.  One version has a slight artifact theme, while the other version plays Land Destruction (which I normally never ever do, but I figure the restriction of only-2-CMC is enough to off-set it). The Sideboard on Tapped Out are the LD cards that get swapped in if it has to be that way, and the Maybeboard are the cards that swap out.

I recently decided to foil this one out, but not to the extent that I’ll cut un-foilable cards for ones that could be foiled. I’m only missing 3 cards, plus some lands.

Gwendlyn di Corci.1 VSBalthor the Defiled

Since no one else had shown up, we decided to play one last game.  A discard deck isn’t a great match-up for a crazy recursion deck, but I’d been carrying it around for awhile and decided to get it over with.

I started with 2 lands and a Rakdos Signet. Balthor had an early Geralf’s messenger. I had no 3rd land drop, and an Evolving Wilds on turn 4. I played a Blizzard Specter and a Liliana’s spectre, which I used to chump block Geth.
I had a Polluted bonds, but Geth just kept stealing my stuff. I got back my Blazing Spectre, but Geth grabbed Alexi, Zephyr Mage, Greel the Mindraker, milled me into an Illusionist’s Bracers (which he took), and a bunch of other things. I don’t remember if I died to damage or to being Milled out.

Not the best game to finish on, but still not a bad game. Also, I hate Geth

About the Deck ( TappedOut Coming Soon)

This was a deck that was built at the same time as Sol’Kanar, and around the same time that I pulled the discard elements out of Oona.  Straight up discard isn’t great in EDH (and it’s not always that much fun to play with or against), but I really liked the Proxy I made for my Italian Gwendlyn from a favorite Dragon Magazine cover image.

Lots of spells and creatures that make discard happen (but in a different way from my Teysa Spirits/Discard deck).  There’s also a slight bounce theme to it.

Game #61: Ruhan of the Fomori

Game #61: Ruhan of the Fomori
Date: 2013-09-11
Location: Family Game Store
Vs.: Balthor
Result: Fun Loss

Ruhan of the FomorivsBalthor the Defiled

I start with a 2 land hand and a Krark’s Thumb and an early Goblin Festival. I play Ruhan on turn 5. Balthor has Entombed a Graveborn Muse. I get in 7 general damage, plus 3 from Lightning Angel. Balthor Black Sun’s Zeniths for 3, nerfing my angel and weaking my crazy general, (who still swings in for 4 General Damage twice more). I use Umbilicus to get back a healthy Lightning Angel, but Balthor does tricks with other zombies to knock everyone down -5/-5, then, also, everything gets sacrificed.

I use a Flame Tongue Kavu on Liliana’s Reaver, but by this point Balthor has a loaded yard (10+ guys) Crypt of Agadeem + Deserted Temple and vomits a whole bunch of Zombie on the table with their favorite tombstone — Akroma’s Memorial — to crush my face for 44. The end.

Total Coins Flipped =1 + 1 from the Thumb.

About the Deck ( http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ramblin-gamblin-ruhan/)

This is my coin-flip deck. I love flipping coins in Magic (and rolling dice, too. This one might get an Un-version). It’s not a Chaos deck though (because those aren’t fun… okay, Tide of War is in).  It can win by Ruhan smashings, and there are plenty of things to Voltron him up, as well as Tap him for value, or Deadeye Navigate, him if I don’t like where he thinks he’s going.  The real goal, however, is to win by Chance Encounter, so there are some enchantment fetchers. It packs a bit of defensive magic to protect the homefront when Ruhan decides to invade, and it also plays Delaying Shield + Umblicus/Blood Clock, which is my favorite way to protect myself.  I’ve not yet won by coinflip, but I’m going to keep trying!

Game #60: Skyfire Kirin

Game #60: Skyfire Kirin
Date: 2013-09-11
Location: Family Game Store
Vs.: Balthor
Result: Unsatisfying Loss

Skyfire KirinvsBalthor the Defiled

I showed up a bit late, but only one other person was there (Balthor), so we decided to play a few games while we waited (and it turned out to be just us).

I draw a bunch of lands and play Skyfire on turn 4. It gets Skin Render-ed. I play Skyfire again. A Memory Jar kind of wrecks my hand (don’t remember what I lost, but it was all good stuff). I jump through a bunch of hoops and cast a number of spells to temporarily borrow  Lord of the Undead and Gravecrawler.  Then I die miserably.

Not a great Maiden Voyage for the Skyfire

About the Deck (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/fire-in-the-sky-1/  partial list)

For reasons I don’t understand, I decided I needed to have an Ultra-Mono (no artifacts or non-Color Identity* cards) Red deck that was also Spirit Tribal (it was almost also Kamigawa Block Constructed….).  Also Skyfire Kirin looks rad in Foil, and red has some fun Arcane/Splice cards.  Sadly, Skyfire doesn’t give haste, and there aren’t that many great Red sac-outlets. It might need Goblin Bombardment.

Result: Moderately fun Loss

Sygg, River GuidevsSek'Kuar, DeathkeeperEzuri, Renegade LeaderSelenia, Dark Angel

Happy Tappy Fish vs Elves and Monsters in Round 4 of the “Night of Insurrection and Obliteration”…

I start with good lands and a Sol Ring. Ezuri starts with Ridiculous, and Selenia is also doing Dumb things. I play some fish and Counter a Hermit Druid.  Ezuri Genesis Waves for 6 but doesn’t get anything too great. Selenia’s Thrashing Wumpus cleanses the board of Elves and also a Merfolk Sovereign and Lullmage Mentor.

Selenia has a Vizkopa Guildmage (which can win games), Sek’Kuar has a Lord of Extinction and casts Insurrection which gives him enough guys to kill the other two players and then kill my creatures (though I live).  I keep myself afloat for quite awhile by casting Summon the School a lot of times. (I think I also had Sek’Kuar in death by general damage range too, but I couldn’t get Sygg to stay out). Sek  uses survival of the fittest to get Mikaeus and then casts Obliterate. I am able to survive for 4 more turns off of little dudes, but not enough to not eventually lose.

About the Deck (http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/tappy-fish/ is close)

This deck is about tapping things and also untapping them for fun and profit. It’s also tribal Merfolk token-swarm, which is really fun. Sygg plus white mana is good times, and Basalt Monolith with Wake Thrasher and a Surestrike Trident (quite fish appropriate) is a good way to just kill someone.  Opposition is in there for Fish Prison fun, and Reconnaissance does work like a boss. This one only plays 35 lands, but I always seem to have enough mana (it’s the opposite of Rakdos)

Game #58: Marton Stromgald

Game #58: Marton Stromgald
Date: 2013-09-04
Location: Family Game Store
vs.: Lazav, Dimir Mastermind; Maelstrom Wanderer; Selenia, Dark Angel
Result: Neutral-to-Fun Win (the crazy endgame was the fun part for me)

Márton StromgaldvsLazav, Dimir MastermindMaelstrom WandererSelenia, Dark Angel

The little guy vs craziness in round 3 of the “Night of Insurrection and Obliteration”…

I start with a Hasty goblin (courtesy of Chancellor of the Forge) and a Single land, and I don’t do a whole lot in the early game.

Maelstrom Wanderer comes out extra fast and brings a Howling Mine and a Mana Doubler with it. Selenia has a Bloodchief Ascension and Sorin of Innistrad as well as a Tainted Sigil. Some how Maelstrom Wanderer is cast again into Akroma’s Memorial and Viscious Shadows.

Someone blows a Memory Jar, and for once, I don’t lose all that much to it.

Lazav, by this point has been a Bloodgift Demon, Platinum Empyrion and becomes a Sylvan Primordial.  Maelstrom plays Show and Tell (Myr Battle Sphere, Oricish Oriflamme for me, Lightning Greaves and Eternety Vessel).

I get out a Blood Moon (which later dies to a reanimated Sylvan Primordial), Ensnaring Bridge, Meekstone and Goblin Bombardment (which gets taken by the Wanderer so it can be sacced to be re-cast). MW is recast bringing Eternal Witness and a Brutalizer Exarch (which hides Sorin).

I dump stuff out of my hand, use tricks to give trample and haste to things and then cast Insurrection, but Marton and Signal Pest get killed, so I only end up doing 14 damage.

Maelstrom Wander casts an Insurrection too, Kills Selenia and sacs all of the things to the Bombardment.  Wanderer gets cast again for something that doesn’t get played and a Font of Mythos.  I draw into Firecat Blitz and realize that I have just enough Mountains in play to cast it and go pretty much All-In to  Flash it Back  for a total of 16 Hasty Fire Kitties. I  swing for 32 (Oriflamme) to Kill Maelstrom Wanderer. Since Lazav died somewhere in there, too, I win!

About the Deck (Tapped out Someday)

Marton Stromgald was the first Legendary Creature I ever cracked in a pack (well, an Ice Age Starter Deck in the Food Court at Miller Hill Mall in Duluth. I was so psyched because it was my #1 want from the set).

The plan for this deck is to play many creatures (preferably ones that are 2 power or less) quickly and then get things like Meekstone and Ensnaring Bridge (which is rad with Grafted Skull Cap and 2-power creatures) as well as stuff that only pumps Attacking Creatures (Hooray for Battle Cry). Then I turn Marton and everyone Sideways as much as possible without fear of retribution. There’s some Token Generation going on as well.  I may throw in a Purphoros some day as an extra bonus, but I kind of like just attacking a lot. Moonveil Dragon is a Boss in this deck, even though she doesn’t really get to attack if things are going correctly.

Game #57: Rakdos, Lord of Riots
Date: 2013-09-04
Location: Family Game Store
vs. Sol’Kanar the Swamp King; Rorix Bladewing

Rakdos, Lord of RiotsvsSol'kanar the Swamp KingRorix Bladewing

Demons and Dragons in Round 2 of the “Night of Insurrection and Obliteration”…

I start with 2 land and a Tormod’s Crypt and a Scroll of Grislebrand. Sol’Kanar has  Sol (ka)Ring and puts a Darksteel something or other onto a Prototype Portal, and soon plays Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. Rorix is doing stuff with artifacts and plays a Voltaic Key. I manage to get a Reassembling Skeleton out.  Sol’Kanar casts Windfall, and I am happy because I have to get land, right? Nope I get 1.  (this deck, while playing 40 lands, is always mana screwed).

Eventually I get a Stuffy Doll out aimed at Sol’Kanar, who has a Necropolis Regent. Then I finally can play Rakdos, but Rakdos dies to Inferno.  I have a Pyrohemia out, but Nicol Bolas kills it.  I terminate a gigantic Regent that swings at me, and replay Rakdos, which Bolas copies some how and then plays a cheap Mindleech Mass, which steals away my Disciple of Bolas (fitting… I suppose). I cast Boris Devilboon and another big creature for cheap, but that’s about all I can manage.  I dont’ remember who won, but I think Rorix had a Hellkite Tyrant and 15 artifacts at one point…

About the Deck (Tapped out Someday)

This is somewhat Demons and Devils tribal, but not really, and lots things to make people lose life so that Rakdos can make things cheaper. Other than that, it’s just an Aggro deck.
