New Decks in the Works, 2015

150 isn’t enough, so I’ve got several new decks in various states of construction.

Scion of the Ur-Dragon, 2:  Takhisis/Dragonlance themed — black knights, Viashino Draconiana, Dragon Highlord Legends,  Mono colored Dragons (okay and the FRF legendaries too).    Oh how I wish that WotC let MTG and DnD cross the streams… Dragons of Tarkir have the WRONG breath weapons.
STATUS: needs lands, and utility cards

Zuberi Golden Feather: Griffin tribal because.
STATUS: needs lands and cards other than griffins

Rosheen Meanderer: The Joy of X. Hydra tribal and X-Spells
STATUS: just needs lands

Asmira, Holy Avenger: Voltron and/or combo (to make Asmira bigger).
STATUS: needs lands and some final cuts

Sakashima the Impostor (Lazav, Dimir Mastermind): Formerly Thada-Adel. Copy, Borrow, Steal, minus merfolk. This one’s also meant to be “Transformable” between a Mono-Blue deck and a Blue Black one.
STATUS: Have to figure out the “Swaps” between the two versions.

Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch: Either a +1/+1 matters deck, or a Bad Girls deck. Also really want to try Bazaar Trader/Hivestone/Plague Sliver somewhere
STATUS: still deciding on Cards

Latulla, Keldon Overseer: Phoenixes and discarding for profit.
STATUS: still deciding on cards

Feldon of the Third Path: Red Mill. This deck is meant to be a “Convertible” deck between Tiny Leaders and a Regular EDH. It will have a TL shell that I can add 50 other cards (of any CMC) to make it a real deck. (and who knows, I might not play much more TL…)
STATUS: Still deciding on the final 50

Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker: SHHHH it’s a Library. Mostly library themed deck (all of the “Book” or “Scroll” artifacts, and other theme-y things) plus some convoluted ways to take advantage of Michiko’s ability. Already made some proxies of Michiko, Masako the Humorless and Linvala Keeper of Silence as the Page Sisters from the Jack of Fables comics.
STATUS: Still in acquisitions mode.

Intet, the Dreamer #2: I wanted to build a RUG Dragons deck and also play with my favorite combo engine of Aluren/Horned Kavu. This one is Kavu, Kobolds and Dragons and maybe a Dragon Storm. Tarkir makes me build more Dragon decks. Intet is just for the colors. I suppose it could be Yasova or Surrak too.
STATUS: still building

Lady Evangela: has been sitting with a rad proxy and wanting to be a Color-matters deck for almost two years
STATUS: just a twinkle in my eyeLady Evangela

Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest: either a Prowess deck or Prowess/Heroic, with maybe Jeskai Ascendancy combo and Sunforger funtimes thrown in. I had lots of possible ways to go with him, still not sure. I considered a RW deck with a Blue general (with only enough U to cast Shu Yun), or a Creatureless build, or Monk Tribal, or having two Shu Yuns (See below)
STATUS: waiting for a few pieces and lands

(Numot the Devastator (Gwafa Hazid/Norin the Wary tag-team): This is human tribal, and most people don’t play Tag-Team rules. Considering letting Shu Yun be the new Commander here)

(Ramses Overdark): considering splitting it into tow decks: a Ninja/Assassin deck and a Rogue/Evil Aura deck. Not sure though.

(Tariel the Reckoner): Considering letting Alesha Who Smiles at Death be the new boss here since she looks kinda Samurai-ish (conflating pseudo-Asian cultures though… and my Tariel proxy is pretty cool)

(Oros the Avenger): Oros Hates Balthor Graveyards is less fun now that Balthor is no-more. Maybe re-configuring it somehow, or scrapping it for parts.

(Xira Arien): Eldrazi Tribal might get scrapped for parts (there’s a real dual in there, plus a Phyrexian Altar that is collecting dust)

Game #150… Coming Soon

I showed up for game night ready to play Deck/Game #150 ( Nextwave Superfriends with Indestructible Sliver), but we had a large showing of people, including some new and old faces.  They had already broken up into two pods of 3, and the two guys (one who runs Gisa, and the other who is best known on this blog for Karona (foils and lucifer) who I wanted to play the deck with were separated.  So Game #150 is postponed until next week

But, I have a lot of decks, so I was prepared.  I won’t give full recaps here (as they aren’t “official” games) but here’s a rundown of how they went.

Game 1:   Ghave Guru of Spores  vs.  Patron of the Moon; GrimGrin; Melek, Izzet Paragon

Ghave, Guru of Spores, Magic, Commander

  • I was mana/color screwed early, and people left me alone
  • Patron built up some crazy amounts of land and other shenanigans with Amulet of Vigor, Proteus Staff, and did lots of beating with Inkwell Leviathan (not at me).  Melek had rebound for everything, GrimGrin did work with Crypt Rats (as always)
  • I built up enchantments: Parallel Lives, Retribution of the Ancients, Death’s Presence (temporarily Blatantly Thieved by Melek).
  • When I finally got mana I ended up with a 24/24 Mycoloth, a 15/15 (later 40/40) Ghave and 40 Saprolings.
  • I swung to kill GrimGrin and Patron (Melek had died already), but Patron had a trick of some sort and that was the end of it.

Game 2:  Xira Arien  vs Karona (Lucifer); Grimgrin; Ascendant Evincar

Xira Arien.2

  • I’m considering retiring this deck, so this might be it’s Farewell Game.
  • I was great for Mana, but Night of Soul’s Betrayal, plus impending Evincar meant that pretty much every card I had in hand (all Eldrazi token makers) were useless for a long time.
  • A activated a Beastmaster’s Ascension pretty much on attacking with a 0/1 or 1/2 Xira alone (once I borrowed Grimgrin).
  • Parallel lives was nice, but Evincar had a pretty strong board state AND was killing creatures with an Altar of Shadows. And stopping life gain with Erebos.
  • It came down to me vs Evincar. I had enough Mana and life left to barely hang on and survive all of the Blood Artist Triggers when I Obliterated with mana floated to cast It That Betrays.
  • A giant Eldrazi that eats your only lands means winning

Game 3:  Animar #1 vs Horde of Notions; Daxos of Meletis

Animar Soul of Elements

  • Only 20 minutes til store close.
  • I kept a weird hand of 4 lands a 0-cmc dude and 7-drops
  • Animar hit the board early and built up pretty well.  “Missed” with an Etherium Horn Sorcerer (an X Hydra).
  • Daxos wrathed, and then was obliterated by Horde.
  • I could cast Animar, but my hand was two 7-drops, an 8-drop, two 9-drops and an 11-drop.   If I had lived to cast Maelstrom wanderer, I might have been okay. But I didn’t.

Game #149: Borborygmos Enraged

Game #149: Borborygmos Enraged
Date: 2015-02-04
Location: Family Game Store
Vs. Kruphix, God of Horizons; Grimgrin, Corpse-Born
Result: Mostly Fun Win

Borborygmos Enraged, Magic, GatecrashvsKruphix, God of Horizons, Magic, Journey Into NyxGrimgrin, Corpse-Born, Magic, Innistrad

I started the game with a 6 land plus Harmonize hand and was quite happy with it.  Kruphix played an early Lorescale Coatl, Grimgrin had a lotus bloom.  I kept playing lands, and cultivated once. Grimgrin played a Sheoldred the turn before I played Borborygmos. I pitched two lands to Borbor to kill Sheoldred before she could recur anything for him.

Next turn I played Illusionist’s Bracers and equipped them, and then harmonized for some more lands. I slung a bunch of damage around after stacking my deck with a Scouting Trek and attacking to flip 3 cards.  Grimgrin tied to cast a Fleshbag Marauder, but I killed him in response. The next turn I attacked Kruphix, discarded 4 lands to put him to 10 and then cast a Knollspine Dragon to draw a ton of cards (and the 2 lands needed to finish him off).  I hadn’t won an on-the-books game in quite a long time.

I had deck #150 ready, but a few of the normal crew weren’t there, and I wanted to save that special deck for when they were around.

About the Deck ( )

I saw a decklist a few years ago for Borborygmos that was some ridiculous number of lands, so I thought I’d try to make my own. I play with either 69 or 70 lands, mostly basics.  The plan is, of course, to sling lands for tons of damage.  Land’s Edge and Seismic Assault are there for redundancy.  Freyalise and Garruk are there to help re-fill the hand (as are Creeping Rennaisance and Knollspine Dragon).  The other best thing are the Illusionist’s Bracers, because discarding one land for 6 damage is some good.

Game #148: Triad of Fates

Game #148: Triad of Fates
Date: 2015-02-04
Location: Family Game Store
Vs. Gisa; Karona (dragonlord); Horde of Notions; GrimGrin
Result:  Fun Loss

Triad of Fates, Magic, TherosvsKarona, False God, Magic, ScourgeGhoulcaller Gisa, Magic, Commander 2014Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, Magic, GatecrashHorde of Notions, Magic, Lorwyn

Lazav was being Grimgrin again, and a different Karona deck was being played (this one was super dragony post Fate Reforged. I was playing a deck that might not have had a win condition.

I started with a 3 land hand and a Quest for the Nihil Stone and Serra’s Hymn.  Gisa came early with a Gauntlet of Power, but I think it got destroyed.  Grimgrin’s pet Crypt Rats came out and did their thing. Then Gisa had Necropotence and a Caged sun.

I spent a lot of time playing with counters. I had Power Conduit and a Astral Cornucopia for 3.  The big play came when Horde of Notions Reforged the Soul pumping my Quest up to 22 counters (and thus fueling the Power Conduit for a long time).  I also built up a Time Bomb to 4.  And was using tricks to use Magistrate’s Scepter every other turn (I have since added Clock of Omens, which is a flavor fit AND would let me have a janky infinite turns machine).   I was also playing lots of Will of the Council  with Coercive Portal and Brago’s Representative.

Gisa was doing things with a Lashwrithe and 1000 year elixir and a caged sun and building up guys, Karona had stuck some pretty dangerous dragons like Utvara Hellkite, possibly thanks to a Dragonstorm for 2.

I had moved on to playing with Eye of Doom (everyone picked on Gisa) and was building a Darksteel Reactor up  (I think I got up to about 12, and had the board not mostly wiped, could have maybe won with it on the next turn(s) via tricks and magewright stone, 100 year elixir and Coretapper (who got killed)). But I had to get on offensive defense and start using Triad to exile creatures and also use Parallax Wave.

I had to blow up the world with Oblivion Stone (saving a few of my things), and I totally cast Frankenstein too, but ultimately couldn’t hold on.  However, I got to do lots of things with random counters, have several Votes (which unfortunately always went my way) AND cast Frankenstein. so it was fun.

About the Deck (tapped out someday)

The plan for this deck was “All of the Counters except +1/+1 or Charge.” But, as I was building it, I realized that it couldn’t be done in any sort of playable way with out at least Charge Counters.  We’ve got Page, Quest, Time, Fate, Verse, Doom, and more. Technically Frankenstein can have +1/+1 and so can Spike Cannibal, but the former will always get +2/+0 counters on my watch, and the latter is there to punish those who play with the dreaded +1/+1.     I wish Giant Fan were black bordered.

This deck was under construction for a LONG time.  When it needed a last bump, I realized that Will of the Council was good in W/B and a good flavor fit as well.  Lastly I added in some flavorful filler like “Doom Blade” and will also add in “Clock of Omens” for synergy and flavor

Game #147: Iname, Death Aspect

Game #147: Iname, Death Aspect
Date: 2015-01-21
Location: Family Game Store
Vs. Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord; Gisa; Lazav Dimir Mastermind
Result: Neutral to Almost Fun Loss

Iname, Death Aspect, Magic, Champions of KamigawavsGhoulcaller Gisa, Magic, Commander 2014Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord, Magic, Duel Decks: Izzet vs. GolgariLazav, Dimir Mastermind, Magic, Gatecrash

I kept a 2 land hand, and got to 3 lands before I stalled for awhile. I played some cheap janky spirits early on (yeah Ghost Hounds!) and also a decent Nether Traitor. Jarad played an early Rune Scarred Demon and Gisa was saccing and recurring Kokusho (at least 3 times). Jarad tried for an Avenger of Zendikar, but Lazav countered it, and then used his pet Crypt Rats to kill of more creatures. I’m still not doing great in the land department.

I get to enough lands to cast Insidious Dreams, searching up Crypt of Agadeem, Necrologia, Witchbane Orb and Mortal Combat and stack it so I draw the crypt and then Necrologia. Jarad has both Thuderfoot Baloth and Demonic Overseer and is saccing dudes to eat our life totals. I have all of the pieces I need to win the game, but not enough mana to do it right away. I had to play the Witchbane orb first (relevant because of Gisa’s Nihil Spellbomb), and was 1 short of also casting both Mortal Combat and Iname as well. However, we were all low enough thanks to Jarad that Gisa just needed to recur Kokusho once more to kill us all.

The other two guys that were there this night ended up playing Two Headed Giant Tiny Leaders (each of them playing two TL decks) for awhile and then just burning out on Tiny Leaders.

About the Deck ( )

This is mostly a pretty standard Win By Mortal Combat OR By Big Crypt of Agadeem Mana Fueled Spell Thanks to Iname’s Ability deck. I play a lot of crappy spirits and a few non-spirits. The rest of the goal is to just load the graveyard and play off of that. Nothing special, but it was fun to play and cheap to build.
