Game #166: Zuberi Golden-Feather
Location: Family Game Store, Savage, MD
vs.: Rhys the Redeemed; Melek, Izzet Paragon; Jarad, Golgari Lich-Lord; Gisa
Result: Neutral Loss
I started out with a 3 land hand, but one of them got destroyed by something early on. I did play an early Forbidding Watchtower. Rhys came out hard with a Wellwisher and Gaea’s Cradle, and Gisa seemed to have a strong start with Swiftfoot Boots and a Volrath’s Stronghold. I played Knighthood and a Griffin Sentinel, followed by a Spear of Heliod. By turn 6 Rhys had a Kozilek, Butcher of Truth, so I had to Sunscour it away.
I should mention that we were also playing Planechase. I didn’t keep great track of what planes got played, but I know I benefitted from rolling Chaos on the Werewolves get double strike plane, and another one that buffed up all flying creatures.
Rhys rebuilt with a Sylvan Offering, and I played Zuberi with Opal Palace. Gisa played a Phyrexian Dreadnought into 12 Zombies and kills Rhys. Zuberi dies to something. There was some swapping of creatures due to a Plane. Then Melek killed Gisa with something from a Spellweaver Volute (!).
Jarad wiped the board. I cast Zuberi again with Opal Palace +2 and a Hero’s blade.
Jarad wiped the board. I cast Zuberi again with Opal Palace +3 and the Blade.
Jarad wiped the board. I cast Zuberi again with Opal Palace +4 and the Blade.
Jarad casts Praetor’s Counsel, getting back board wipes, and Kills Zuberi. I lack the Mana to re-cast until I can charge up a storage land.
I die to Sphinxbone Wand. This game went on much longer than I had anticipated. We were going to split into two pods of 3 after the game, and I was going to go play with Gisa and another just arrived player, but Rhys went with them, so I had to stay at this table.
About the Deck: (Tapped Out Someday)
This is pretty much Griffin Tribal, with the occasional Archon, and mass-creature buffs. Not too much to say about it really. When “Mythological Animal Hybrids.dec” became Selvala’s Little Ponies, I had a lot of Griffins that needed a home. I actually enjoyed how it played (mostly due to Hero’s Blade)
