Game #218: Eron the Relentless
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Kynaio+; Exava, the Blood Witch; Dragonlord Ojutai; Omnath, Locus of Rage
Result: Neutral Loss
The first game of 2017 started out as a 3 person game that added a 4th and a 5th appeared.
I had a lot of lands in hand, opened with a Ghitu Encampment, which swung until I cast Eron on turn 5. Omnath Ramped, Kynaios did Kynaios things (the deck was still mostly stock, though it was the same guy who is also leveling-up his Atraxa deck), Ojutai hit the board early and played controll, and Exava hit early and was swinging hard.
Omnath had lots of stuff to generate card advantage and token advantage. Exava dropped an Underworld Cerberus and Kynaios played a Zedruu that donated an Oath of Druids to me. On my 6th turn I oathed in a Seismic Elemental and attacked Ojutai with Eron the Relentless, and used a spell to kill off Omnath’s Oracle of Mul Daya. Exava had out a No Mercy. Both Ojutai and Kynaios were hiding be hind various Propaganda effects. Ojutai started to get the upper hand, but then Omnath wen’t crazy (but slowly, though we did stop it once, via Kynaios’s Blasphemous Act and me killing Omnath first to prevent damage triggers AND also regenerating Eron). Omnath got back all lands from the graveyard, ended up with around 18 elemental tokens, pinged out Ojutai and smashed the rest of us (Thanks to Fires of Yavimaya), though it took him a long time to figure out that he had basicaly won.
Had I lived to turn 8, my plan was to Mob Rule away all the big creatures attack into No Mercy with Omnath and Elmentals (but not kill Exava) and use the damage triggers to knock other people down. I also had Jiwari Earth Aflame in hand and was looking forward to being able to Channel it to get around Ojutai’s Teferi). Didn’t happen though
About the Deck (behind on TappedOut again…)
I needed a better Ultra-Mono Red deck (Skyfire Kirin, was a bit lame… though I kept that deck together too). Eron is from Homelands, a set that I am in the Ultra-Minority for loving (Don’t think that Chandler and Joven aren’t also getting a deck and the word “Partner” sharpied right on them). It’s mostly just cool red stuff, like Fire Servant, and no non-red-color-identity spells. The theme is: Attack, Burn, Repeat. I wish the Homeland’s version was foil, but I settled for the Timeshifted foil. Also, he looks a bit like Jaco Pastorius to me.
