Game #111: Sek’Kuar the Deathkeeper

Game #111: Sek’Kuar the Deathkeeper
Location: Friend’s House in Baltimore
Vs. Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs
Result: neutral Loss

Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper, Magic, ColdsnapvsKazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs, Magic, Worldwake

Disappointed with the previous game, I pulled out another deck that I wasn’t too excited to play (but needed to get through). I started out with 5 (snow) Lands, Orcish Lumbjerack, sextant and a Balduvian Warlord. Kazuul ramped and eventually had a Furnace of Rath and a Moonveil Dragon (Which I was able to Kill via Stalking Yeti, thanks to the Furnace). I tried some tricks trying to force blocks because I had a venomous breath in hand, but instead just died to Ancient Hellkite pinging everything to death.

About the Deck (tappedout someday)
This deck is Ice Age Block Constructed (Ice Age-Alliances-Coldsnap) because I felt like it. All the lands are snow. There are some decent cards in it, but a lot of filler as well, and it doesn’t have fantastic Synergy. Sometimes I really want to play it, but not often. It was more of an experiment.

Game #102: Prossh, Skyraider of Kher

Game #102: Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
Date: 2014-01-29
Location: Family Game Store
Vs: Balthor; Sigarda, Host of Herons

Prossh, Skyraider of Kher, Magic, Commander 2013vsBalthor the DefiledSigarda, Host of Herons, Magic, Avacyn Restored

I missed playing last week due to a bet regarding the weather. This week there ended up being only 3 of us, so we got quite a few games in. Also, Balthor’s player, who likes giving me things just-because decided he didn’t need his complete run of James Robinson’s “Starman” (my very favorite Superhero Comic of all time) and let me have them. Also, he announced that he had a Foil German Balthor in the mail, which was a bummer because I was trying to track one down for him as a surprise. On to the games…

I got pretty land-screwed to start out this game, though I did play a Crimson Kobolds turn 1. I had to discard twice while at 2 lands, because everything in my hand cost 3. I did manage to Rancor up my Kobold, but a damnation ended that fun. Balthor had a Lord of the Undead and an Undead Warchief at the time, and Sigarda had a StoneForge Mystic, Khemba and two Swords.

I finally got up to 4 lands and I had a Kodama’s Reach. I got Bubbling Cauldron and Bogbrew Witch online, but by this time Sigarda had protection from everything and had Infect, so Balthor died.

If I had any way to give Prossh Haste I could have won, but I didn’t so, instead I summoned a Festering Newt from my library and died.

About the deck (tapped out Someday)
Prossh was my favorite of the Pre-con generals, so I decided to build him his own deck. Of course it had to be Kobold Themed, and Rohgahh of Kher Keep had to be in the 99 (with a Time of Need to find him). Also, Dragon Appeasement is my favorite non-legend from Alara block, so this deck is also built around that card. Lots of sacrifice outlets.

Game #56: Xira Arien

Game #56: Xira Arien
Date: 2013-09-04
Location: Family Game Store
vs. Edric, Spymaster of Trest; Vorel of the Hull Clade

Xira Arien.2vsEdric, Spymaster of TrestVorel of the Hull Clade

The Eldrazi Horde vs Simic Guys in Round 1 of the “Night of Insurrection and Obliteration”…

I start with 2 lands and a Moss Diamond and later a Basalt Monolith plus Nest Invader and Emrakul’s Hatcher.

Vorel has an Enclave Cryptologist, then soon a Doubling Season and Primordial Hydra.

Edric entwines Tooth and Nail for Ulamog and Spore Frog. Vorel  unkicked Rite of Replications Ulamog (please note that I am the one playing Eldrazi Tribal…)  Edric has Genesis and Spore Frog online and Natural Orders for  Woodfall Primus

I have an Ulamog’s Pawn and another Eldrazi Spawn. Edric Kicked Rite of Replication on my Kozilek’s Predator and Edric’s Ulamog attacks Vorel. Vorel tries a Kederekt Leviathan, but it’s Mana Drained. Then Edric Knowledge Exploitations me, casts Obliterate, and it’s over.

About the Deck (Tapped out Someday)

This is Eldrazi and Eldrazi Spawn Tribal with friends. Emrakul is still legal  in my own home, but She/he/it (in your best Clay Davis voice) only gets played against my brother (also this deck was originally built before that banning). The other reason this deck exists is because I love Dragon Appeasement a lot (and the general is card-draw). It’s pretty much every card that is or says Eldrazi on it and a few other good things like Beast Master Ascension. I think my brother and I also allow Spawnsire of Ulamog to do its Ultimate (I need a huge stack of Ulamog’s Crushers).

This deck could maybe maybe get taken apart to build Prossh (or maybe I’ll take apart Kresh), but then again, probably not.

Game #33 : Kresh, the Blood-Braided

Game #33 : Kresh, the Blood-Braided
Date: 2013-07-09
Location: Friend’s house in Duluth
vs: Lorax, the Siege Tower; Varolz, the Scar-Striped; Gaddock Teeg
Result: Mostly Fun Loss

Kresh the BloodbraidedVS.  Doran the Siege Tower

Varolz, the Scar-StripedGaddock Teeg

I had just updated Kresh with some new cards from RtR block, so I decided to give him a whirl in the second game of the evening.  I had plenty of land in the opening hand, plus the newly-added Birthing Pod, so I was happy.

Teeg started with a Ground Seal and cast another cantrip to try to draw a land.  I Birthing Podded something into an Acidic Slime to get rid of the Ground Seal (since my deck does some targeted graveyard recursion). Later the Pod is Krosan Gripped  When I got to 5-lands, I played Kresh and equipped Lightning Greaves.

Teeg had a Dauntless Escort and Saffi Eriksdotter assisting him, and Varolz had an opening on the table. Doran played an Avenger of Zendikar with 7 lands, and then Enlightened tutored on his upkeep of the next turn for a Beastmaster Ascension and plowed through to kill Varolz.   Teeg was keeping both me and Doran from some of our other important spells.    Doran was only at 10 and was tapped out except for the general.  I used the “Blood” half of  Flesh // Blood to have the Acidic Slime kill a 5/10 Doran, which made Kresh 8/8, and swung in to kill Doran.

At this point I have 6 lands, my hand consists of Hamletback Goliath, Butcher of Malakir, and at least one other 7+ Mana bomb creature. I also have two great recursion tricks… both of which have CMC over 4.  The only card I can play is Surestrike Trident, which isn’t that bad, but I only get one use out of it (for about 10) with Kresh before it’s destroyed.  Despite a Very Large Kresh, I’m unable to get through for the win, and after my Gruul Karoo is destroyed, I get swarmed by the Greenie Weenies.

About the Deck: (TappedOut coming someday)

This one uses a lot of sacrifice effects to pump up Kresh. It does, now, include  Flesh//Blood, and it has Surestrike Trident, but I didn’t put Fling in this one.  It has a lot of reanimation effects (but the bigger ones, like Cauldron Dance, etc.), and it’s back up plan is to do stuff with Necrotic Ooze  (like try to Birthing Pod chain Devoted Druid into Quillspike into the Nooze).  Forawhile it had a number of Demons in it, but I pulled many of them to put in another deck.   I don’t play this one all that often. It needs more utility spells and removal.
