Game #96: Lady of the Mountain
Location: Family Game Store, Savage, MD
Vs: Exava; Ghave; Purphoros
Result: Neutral Loss
Since we were stuck against another potential Purph-bomb, I pulled out my Pauper Commander deck (I follow the “Legend that has seen print as a common” rule for my general selection). I had 3 lands and a Sakura Tribe Elder and felt pretty good. Purphoros dropped a Sol Ring turn 1 and followed up with Tooth and Claw, Kyren Negotiations and a Mana Echoes (luckily the Tooth and Claw and Echoes all got destroyed). Exava was swinging damage all over the place with a shadowy guy and the general herself. Ghave is making big trouble.
I try to kill Ghave using Spitting Earth, but it doesn’t work. I played a few Giants and Ogres (but only one land destruction spell) but mostly they died to Butcher of Malakir. Purphoros was on the table, but no creatures were appearing, and Ghave had achieved a Parallel Lives and a Perilous Forays, as well as a big Mycoloth and a Nemata. Exava was able to Spine Rock Knoll out an Attrition and took care of some of Ghave’s Board, but then Ghave tutored for Coat of Arms and that was the end of us.
About the Deck (tapped out someday)
This deck is a loose Giant-Tribal Pauper deck that focuses on ramp and targeted Land Destruction (normally I’m against LD, but I feel like the Pauper restriction is a balancing factor). I do sneak in some cards like Giant Spider (that are Giant in name only) and some non-giants that help fetch lands. Lady of the Mountain was chosen for her Creature type, the fact that she was one of the first original legends I ever got (along with Lady Orca and Jasmine Boreal), and that she was printed as a “common” in a Masters’ Edition.
