Game #228: Urabrask the Hidden
Date: 2017-05-2
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Lyzolda, the Blood Witch; Muzzio, Visionary Architect
Result:   Neutral Loss

Due to Backlog, and temporal distance, these recaps will be brief.

Recap notes: I had a Goblin Kaboomist and Koth of the Hammer, before dying to 45 Myr Incubator Tokens.

About the Deck

This one is all creatures, all red, and moslty goblins.

Game #227: Yahenni, Undying Partisan

Game #227: Yahenni, Undying Partisan (3)
Date: 2017-04-25
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Breya; Yidris (Stock); Roon
Result:  Fun loss

Due to time and backlog, recaps will be short

Roon had to go early
-consuming aberration was the death of us
-needed a way through, and almost won
big life swings
-die to being milled. 2 cards left in library, swamp would’ve milled, final draw is a wrath that would have allowed Yahenni to swing through

About the Deck

Destroy other creatures, tokens to make Yahenni Indestructible.

Game #225: Hanna, Ship’s Navigator (2)

Game #225: Hanna, Ship’s Navigator (2)
Date: 2017-03-21
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Silas/Thrasios; Thassa
Result:   Mostly Fun Loss

Another Daughter Deck.

I started the game with a Hope of Ghirapur and some Inventor’s Goggles.  Thassa had an early Cosi’s Trickster, and Silas/Thrasios came out of the gate with a Burgeoning into an Awakening Zone into a Sword of War and Peace (and then quickly a Scavenging Ooze and a Copy of Thassa).   I played Hanna on turn 4, but didn’t have much to do until a Favorable Winds and a Consulate Dreadnought on turn 7 and 8 (sadly I could never find gas for the boat, though there was plenty of room to sail thanks to Thassa’s Quicksilver fountain and Thada-Adel).  I used a Confiscation Coup to steal Thassa’s Surge Spanner (and I stuck a Freed from the Real on it for fun), but did little else (Cast a Thassa of my own, and a Narwhal).  There was a mass bounce around turn 13, and after that Thassa dropped a bunch of merfolk and fish-buffs, and then I died.   It wasn’t an un-fun game, I just couldn’t get stuff into play.  I did generate 9 energy, and used 4 of it…

About the Deck ( )

This deck is about Energy, Vehicles (especially boats, and extraespecially flying boats), and Whales (especially flying ones), and it is sort of themed towards “inqisitively and exuberantly exploring the world,” which are all qualities I hope my daughter will have.

Extra fun stuff includes getting to play Narwhal, Cunning, and Traveler’s Cloak. Mom is in the deck, but Dad stayed home to build more artifacts. It is more artifact heavy than enchantment laden.  I like the flying Whales a lot.

Game #213.8: Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder

Game #213.8: Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder
Date: 2017-04-25
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Bruse/Kraum(?); UG – Partners
Result:   Neutral Loss

Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder, Magic, Commander 2016vs(/),(/)

Again, I didn’t hit my Zombie achievement, so only 2 swaps. All I noted is that someone killed my Kruphix for no great reason, and then the next turn the other player won via Labratory Maniac.

Game #213.6: Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder

Game #213.6: Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder
Date: 2017-03-21
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Kynaios; Kiki Jik
Result:   Neutral Loss

Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder, Magic, Commander 2016vsKynaios and Tiro of Meletis, Magic, Commander 2016Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Magic, Champions of Kamigawa

I had Waste Not on turn 2 and a Wheel in hand, but it got killed by an Aura Shards (hate that card).  Then I Decimated the Shards.  I did not hit the 20 zombies achievement, so I only earned two swaps.   Also, the Kynaios player complained that I took long turns, and that my deck didn’t “do anything” because Cascade was just diddly.  I took offense to that; I always take my turns with purpose when playing this deck, and I don’t actually always just cascade.

Game #224: Hanna, Ship’s Navigator (1)

Game #224: Hanna, Ship’s Navigator (1)
Date: 2017-03-14
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Lyzolda; Karador; Mizzix
Result:   Fun Loss

Hanna, Ship's Navigator, Magic, Judge PromosvsKarador, Ghost Chieftain, Magic, CommanderMizzix of the Izmagnus, Magic, Commander 2015

The main reason why my posts have been so sporadic has been the birth of my daughter. In her honor I was going to build her a deck with her semi-namesake as the commander. I wound up with three. This game was quite a long one, but very fun.

I started out with a traveler’s amulet and an expedition map (two of the only artifacts in this deck), and an early Thassa and Serra’s Sanctum. Mizzix (who was cast 4 times in this game) started with a Goblin Matron and an Electromancer, Lyzolda had an early Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath, and Karador had both Kokusho and Solemn Simulacrum early as well.  Karador wrathed on turn 6.

I cast Hanna on turn 7, and followed it with Skybind and fetched a Dictate of Heliod and Sigarda’s Aid via Plea for Guidance.   Somewhere in here the board got wiped again, and Hana came out again.  I played a Heliod, and did some blinking tricks with Skybind and the Serra’s Sanctum. I had up to 11 clerics when Blasphemous Act happened, and then Lyzolda Chaos Warped Heliod.  I played a Sphere of Safety, which got Pridemaged away. Mizziz did a Cyclonic Rift.  I played a Blessed Spirits that got decently large, and carried a Thassa’s Emissary.  Lyzolda killed Mizzix.     My notes don’t say exactly how it ended, other than that I came very very close to actually winning.

About the Deck (

This one is the (almost) all Enchantment deck, representing creativity.  It is also nearly entirely permanents (with the exception of Plea for Guidance and the Cleansing Meditation that needs to be put in the deck!).  It plays quite a few Bestow creatures, and could go Hanna “Voltron” if needed. Additionally, both of Hanna’s parents are in the deck.  I think I use the Foil promo Terese Nielsen version.

Game #222: Scion of the Ur-Dragon 2.0

Game #222: Scion of the Ur-Dragon 2.0
Date: 2017-01-24
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Radha, Heir to Keld; General Tazri
Result:   Neutral Loss

vsRadha, Heir to Keld, Magic, Planar ChaosGeneral Tazri, Magic, Prerelease Cards

Some Highlights (as I am writing this almost 7 months after playing the game).

  • This is the first game to be recorded in the “Book of Simic” (my second moleskine in this project).
  • I got to Deathrender in a few dragons, and Tasigur.
  • Radha had a turn 6 Kozilek, and did a Scourge of Valkas/Dragon Broodmother
    • Mid game, I traded my non-Japanese Scourge of Valkas for Radha’s Japanese one.
  • I did cast Scion at least once, and it became a Scourge of Nel Toth (but I died that turn). I was at 1 life.

About the Deck

This is a Dragonlance Chronicles theme deck.  Scion has a cool Takhisis Proxy (though I might just use the Ur-Dragon once this year’s Commander decks come out).  It has:

  •  3 mono-colored dragons of each of the five colors.
  •  5 Viashino (1 one of each color) as “Draconians”.
  • Several Black Knights (Knights of Takhisis) and Ihsans Shade (“Lord Soth”)
  • 5 B/x Legends as the “Dragon Highlords”  (Sivitri Scarzam, Grenzo, Tasigur, Teysa (new), Vhati-il Dal)
  • A few other little things

Game #223: Daghatar the Ancient

Game #223: Daghatar the Ancient
Date: 2017-01-24
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Kiki-Jiki; General Tazri
Result:   Unfun Loss

Daghatar the Adamant, Magic, Fate ReforgedvsGeneral Tazri, Magic, Prerelease CardsKiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Magic, Champions of Kamigawa

This one went pretty long, as the Allies deck took long turns to figure stuff out and had a Mana Echoes. Kiki-Jiki got a Koth emblem early, had two Valakuts, and got to Karn’s Ultimate range with an Ulamog.  There was an All is Dust that also wrecked the board.  I didn’t really get to do any thing exciting or fun in the game, just play catch up.  Cool things that were on the table for me included a turn 1 Rogue Elephant, a Tusk-Caller up to level 2, and Daghatar got cast twice.   Really though, I think this is a game where I would have scooped to speed things up, but I was still sticking with my “No Scooping Resolution,” which made me grumpy.

About the Deck

Elephants are amazing animals.  There isn’t a non-silver bordered Elephant Legend, so Daghatar gets to be the guy.  The rest of the deck is lots of elephants and loxodon, and a few +1/+1 counters things (but mostly just all of the elephants, or things that make elephants).

Game #213.5: Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder

Game #213.5: Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder

Result:   Fun Loss

Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder, Magic, Commander 2016vsBorborygmos Enraged, Magic, Gatecrash,Radha, Heir to Keld, Magic, Planar Chaos

Something happened with Boompile, but I hit all achievements:  Play a Game, Cast Yidris, Commander damage an opponent, Commander damage EACH opponent, Cascade twice in a turn.

Game #221: Ravos/Tana

Game #221: Ravos/Tana
Date: 2017-01-10
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Atraxa +; Omnath Locus of Rage; Kynaios and Tymna
Result:   Neutral Loss

NOTE: due to a baby, I’m way behind in updates, so  I’m not going to write a full game write up initially. Also, due to me playing this game almost 4 months ago, I don’t remember the details from my notes as well

Ravos, Soultender, Magic, Commander 2016/Tana, the Bloodsower, Magic, Commander 2016vsOmnath, Locus of Rage, Magic, Prerelease CardsAtraxa, Praetors' Voice, Magic, Commander 2016Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis (Commander 2016), Magic, Oversize Cards

  • I had an Ant Queen and Eldrazi Monument
  • I cast Ravos twice, but he only lived a turn each time, due to Board Wipes
  • Died before turn 10 to a huge army that included a 150/150 selfless squire that Kynaios gave trample somehow. Also Omnath vomited out like 30 elementals all at once with Scapeshift.
  • I didn’t make as many tokens as I planned to.
  • This was the very last game to fit into “The Book of Orzhov,” the purple moleskine that I keep my game write-ups in.  Time to get a new book!

About the Deck

Ravos is my favorite partner, and Tana makes 2/2s when he’s around. This deck is mostly about making tokens and swarming.
