Game #215: Depala, Pilot Exemplar

Game #215: Depala, Pilot Exemplar
Date: 2016-12-13
Location: Red Castle Games, Portland OR
Vs. Atraxa +; Tymna/Ludavic
Result:   Mostly Fun Loss

Depala, Pilot Exemplar, Magic, KaladeshvsAtraxa, Praetors' Voice, Magic, Commander 2016(Tymna the Weaver, Magic, Commander 2016/Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist, Magic, Commander 2016)

I kept a 3 land hand with no Red, but was able to play a Keyrune on turn 3 followed by a Barge and some Inventors Goggles (that I didn’t realize dont’ work well with most of my creatures).  I played Depala on turn 5, drove a boat and grabbed a dwarrf. Turn 6 I played a few more dwarves. Atraxa wiped the board with a Duneblast and played a Cathars Crusade and Scavenging Ooze. Then the next turn Blasphemos Act wiped the board again.

On turn 8 i played Depala again (for the second of 4 or 5 times), and a Glory of Warfare, and then Gisela on turn 9 and used to drive another car.  Ludevic/Tymna played Kazuul and Tauren Mauler but then there was a board wipe.  Turn 10 I played Depala and a Fanatic. Atraxa cast Languish, and tried to recast Atraxa (but it was countered). Tymna played a Psychosis Crawler. I recast Depala again, and the next turn dug through 9 cards, only getting 3, though the Duergar Hedge mage did kill off a Cathar’s Crusade and a Lightning Greaves. Then Atraxa cast Duneblast again.

Turn 13 I cast several vehicles, turn 14 a Nahiri’s Machinations and a Relentless Assault. I should’ve attacked Atraxa twice, but I split my attacks.  Then Atraxa killed me.

About the Deck (tapped out someday)

This deck is mostly about getting Vehicles or Dwarves into play.  It’s still undergoing some updates.

Vs. Phenax, God of Deception; Sisters of Stone Death
Result: Fun Loss

Anax and Cymede, Magic, Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monstersvs.Sisters of Stone Death, Magic, RavnicaPhenax, God of Deception, Magic, Born of the Gods
Another match against the Sisters and the God of Deception. I had a 3 land hand and started with an Akroan Hoplite. I played Anax and Cymede on turn 3 and had a number of spells to cast at them and the Hoplite, including Launch the Fleet, which let me make some decent early aggressive attacks. Phenax had out Memory Erosion, which was annoying. Sister’s Ramped into a Boundless Realms with an Amulet of Vigor and then cast Decree of Pain and tried for Vraska (who was countered). Phenax summoned Ashiok, and I had an Archetype of Courage with an Angelic Destiny. Phenax was down to 2 so I killed him to get rid of the Memory Erosion, but then Sisters petrified some things, cast Increasing Ambition, and rolled me over with General Damage. it was a fun game because I at least got to put some early pressure on.

About the Deck (Tapped out someday)
This is a mostly Soldier Tribal deck. It started out as a Heroic deck, but A&C were more fun to play as a way to buff other people and not have to worry about targeting multiple creatures with spells. I took some stuff out of Jor-Kadeen to build this one.

Game #112: Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer

Location: Friend’s House in Baltimore
vs. Stonebrow, Krosan Hero
Result: neutral loss

Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer, Magic, New PhyrexiavsStonebrow, Krosan Hero, Magic, Time Spiral

This was a deck I thought had a chance. It’s won games before. I start with a 2 land hand and miss my third land drop. I wouldn’t get over 4 lands in the game. I had a Kor Skyfisher, Auriok Steelshaper and a Whispersilk Cloak, which worked nicely together and eventually a Soltari Guerrillas (Which are awesome). Stonebrow got his general out as well as a Deus of Calamity, which was a huge problem as I had a Windbrisk Heights sitting with a token spell on it, and I could NOT afford to lose ANY lands. Thus I had to block, keeping me under 3 creatures. Stonebrow grabbed Soul of the Harvest and I just couldn’t deal with a bunch of 8/8 Tramplers. This game was a bummer.

About the Deck (tapped out someday)
This is Soldier Tribal Metal Craft. Nothing super original, but I had a lot of fun with it back in the day. It always feels like it’s missing something or should be re-vamped and updated, so that keeps me from playing it more. When I go to make changes, though, I don’t know what to cut. I’ll probably keep this one together.

Game #65: Brion Stoutarm

vs.: Balthor; Sapling of Colfenor; Ruhan of the Fomori; Karona, the False God;

Brion StoutarmvsBalthor the DefiledSapling of ColfenorRuhan of the FomoriKarona, False God

I started with 3 lands, personal sanctuary , Squee and a Sunforger, which seemed decent.

There was a mana doubler at some point. Ruhan played a Grand Melee and later a Powerstone Minefield for extra fun.  Karona played a scrambleverse, and I ended up with 3 zombies and a Terastodon, but then a Living Death is played.

Karona has a, quite relevant, Ice Caves. I manage to level up a Figure of Destiny, but it dies to removal. Balthor has a huge Soulless One, while Sapling of Colfenor, via Vigor, has gotten quite large.

At one point I have Brion, Sunrise Sovereign and a Nim Deathmantle, but I don’t think I won this game. I don’t actually remember who won it, but it was a decent game.

About the Deck (TappedOut soon)

It’s pretty much about Brion flinging things, with a bit of Giant tribal.  Most often, it’s Squee that gets tossed, which is sort of silly and inefficient.  There’s some damage prevention and some damage doublers (as well as Avacyn and Gisela), and I like Pyrohemia.

Game #61: Ruhan of the Fomori

Game #61: Ruhan of the Fomori
Date: 2013-09-11
Location: Family Game Store
Vs.: Balthor
Result: Fun Loss

Ruhan of the FomorivsBalthor the Defiled

I start with a 2 land hand and a Krark’s Thumb and an early Goblin Festival. I play Ruhan on turn 5. Balthor has Entombed a Graveborn Muse. I get in 7 general damage, plus 3 from Lightning Angel. Balthor Black Sun’s Zeniths for 3, nerfing my angel and weaking my crazy general, (who still swings in for 4 General Damage twice more). I use Umbilicus to get back a healthy Lightning Angel, but Balthor does tricks with other zombies to knock everyone down -5/-5, then, also, everything gets sacrificed.

I use a Flame Tongue Kavu on Liliana’s Reaver, but by this point Balthor has a loaded yard (10+ guys) Crypt of Agadeem + Deserted Temple and vomits a whole bunch of Zombie on the table with their favorite tombstone — Akroma’s Memorial — to crush my face for 44. The end.

Total Coins Flipped =1 + 1 from the Thumb.

About the Deck ( http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ramblin-gamblin-ruhan/)

This is my coin-flip deck. I love flipping coins in Magic (and rolling dice, too. This one might get an Un-version). It’s not a Chaos deck though (because those aren’t fun… okay, Tide of War is in).  It can win by Ruhan smashings, and there are plenty of things to Voltron him up, as well as Tap him for value, or Deadeye Navigate, him if I don’t like where he thinks he’s going.  The real goal, however, is to win by Chance Encounter, so there are some enchantment fetchers. It packs a bit of defensive magic to protect the homefront when Ruhan decides to invade, and it also plays Delaying Shield + Umblicus/Blood Clock, which is my favorite way to protect myself.  I’ve not yet won by coinflip, but I’m going to keep trying!

Game #34: Aurelia, the Warleader

Game #34: Aurelia, the Warleader (non-guild)
Date: 2013-07-09
Location: Friend’s house in Duluth
vs: Kumano, Master Yam; Varolz, the Scar-Striped; Linvala, Keeper of Silence
Result: Fun Win

Aurelia, the WarleaderVS.Kumano, Master Yamabushi

Varolz, the Scar-StripedLinvala, Keeper of Silence

My opening hand had one land, and a bunch of really cool 2-drops, but I didn’t feel like taking a risk. Sadly, the people I was playing with used mulliganing (I’m used to at least one free “this is a casual/fun format with no prizes and mana-screw sucks” mulligan”) so I had to go down to 6 cards  (I HATE the Partial-Sculpting mulligan)… this was not going to be a great game…

My new hand was playable though (it had at least one of each color). Varolz  was on the attack out of the  gates, with a Hypnotic Specter and a Survival of the Fittest.  The Hippie was aimed at Kumano.  I spent the early part of the game playing lands. I got to 4, and was hoping to cast Assmble the Legion, when  Kumano spun the Wheel and we all drew 7. I drew 4 lands, a Cluestone and an equipment or somthing minor.  My two weenie dudessat on the table, and I literally just dropped lands for the next few turns.

Linvala was building up a good army, and dropping Swords left and right. One got exiled by a cat, the other got Oblivion Ringed by me after it pinged me for 2.  Akroma had also come out to play.  Varolz got a Sylvan Primordial and picked off one of my lands (usually I hate that, but it wasn’t so bad with a hand full of them), and then Survivaled for Sheoldred.

Thanks to Linvala’s Extraplanar Lens, I had tons of mana. Just nothing to cast.  I chump blocked Sheoldred twice (dudes were gonna die on my turn anyway).  Then Linvala, my secret hero, played the “destroy all non-white stuff” spell and saved us from Sheoldred.   Kumano hadn’t had much of an impact on the game, or was at least leaving me along.

Now that I could cast things, I got started. First I put a Boros Charm on a Spellbinder, played Aurelia, equipped and swung, hitting Varolz  for 9 after casting the double strike mode before the 2nd attack.  I also did 8 damage to Linvala with the other two Spellbinder triggers.  However, Varolz pulled back the damn Sylvan Primordial (Reach… ugh) and also popped my spellbinder.  Linvala cast Day of Judgment, and Marshall’s Anthem-ed back Akroma.

Kumano and Varolz continued to fight each other, with Kumano DragonStorming out 3 dragons, and I was able to sneak in Odric, Master Tactician, Darksteel Plate and a Sunforger. Before my turn I Rallied in two soldier tokens.  On my turn I had enough to re-cast Aurelia and Equip the Sun Forger AND cast Battle Mastery on her, which gave me 4 creatures ready to attack… A lot.

I needed both Attack steps to eliminate Varolz and Kumano, and was also able to land some General Damage on Linvala. Odric had decided that there would not be blocking happening at this point.   However I was at low enough life that Linvala’s counter attack would have finished me off (since I couldn’t block Akroma), luckily I was able to throw a magic hammer and find an Angel Song to keep myself alive and hang on for the victory.

This marks the 2nd time in this project that one of my Aurelia decks has pulled off a WTF style victory.

About the Deck: (TappedOut coming soon)

I enjoy my Guild Aurelia deck so much, I wanted to try her out with a wider selection of cards.  This one is just about attacking, and doing it a lot.  It can get infinite attack steps using one of my all time favorite cards, Angelic Renewal (love the Rebecca Guay art), and Sun Titan and a sac outlet,  or an Adarkar Valkyrie and a sac-outlet.   I had an extra Boros Reckoner, so he’s in there too, and he can do his Lifelink/Indestructible shenanigans as a back up.    Gisela is around, as is Odric and a number of other creatures with Battalion.   At one point I had considered Astral Slide, but there wasn’t room, though there are still a few cycling cards

Game #16: Aurelia the Warleader (Guild)
Date: 2013-04-24
Location: Family Game Store, Savage, MD
vs: Prime Speaker Zeganna (Guild); Savra, Queen of the Golgari (Guild), Skullbriar (Ooze Tribal)
Result: WTF Win?

Aurelia, the Warleader vx. Savra, Queen of the Golgari

zegannaSkullbriar, the Walking Grave

The second game at “the Fun Table” on this evening.  Zeganna got off to a strong start, having, at one point,  Zeganna, Biomancer, Fathom Mage and Gatecreeper vine. Savra hadn’t quite gotten rolling, but had a Corpsejack Menace. Skullbriar was drawing cards and building up a pretty big Predator Ooze via Death’s Presence.  I struggled to keep dudes on the table, and was hiding behind a Hazdaa Shieldmate with a hand full of not-great Boros cards.

I cast Aurelia, got a swing in and then had her tapped by Evolution Vat and Dream Leashed.  Having nothing but lands left, I cast Razia’s Purification.   I kept Sunhome, Boros Karoo, and a plains. Savra kept herself and 2 lands and paid 4 life off of some sacrifice triggers to wipe the board of creatures… except for a 21/21 Predator Ooze.  When Savra tried to recast a Thought Picker Witch, I foolishly Lighting Helixed her because I am BAD AT MAGIC. Zeganna pointed out the fact that it could have dealt with giant indestructible ooze. I apologized.

I took the hit from the Ooze, dropping to 9 life. I topdecked a Thundersong Trumpeter, which survived to become active and used it to stave off the Ooze while we all rebuilt (until it got Dark Hatchling-ed).  Skullbriar had a pretty big board, but Zeganna was back, and big enough (thanks to a Biomass Mutation and Flight of Fancy) to fly over for 11 at Skullbriar… which became 22 thanks to My Sunhome.  Some how I wind up sticking Aurelia again along with a Firemane Angel and the 1/1 first strike guy. I don’t think I can get in for enough to kill Zeganna because of his flier… then suddenly, thanks to a Korozda Guildmage, Aurelia is a bit bigger and a bit more intimidating and she flies in for enough double strike, double attack phase to General damage out Zeganna.  Then  I’m able to recast her after Savra kills her, and fly in for enough to pull out another win.

Another silly game that I should have lost, but didn’t, that was fun for all involved (I hope). The next table over was full of Combo players talking about how many cards are bad, and how it’s only okay to loose to decks that are optimized.

About the Deck

Not much to say about this one. It’s Guild Wars style, so all of the cards are from Ravnica Blocks and are either un-guilded or Boros stamped. It’s fun, it plays some bad Radiate Cards, and Aurelia is just darn fun.
